6 Things We’re Thankful For in 2024
At the end of 2023, having seen the Writer’s and Actors’ Guild strikes finally resolved, the Scriptation team was excited to get back to work with the just-released version 4.5 that introduced Tagging to everyone’s favorite script annotation & reading app. Who would have known the excitement that would lay ahead — for users and developers alike. As we gather with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving in the states (with apologies we didn’t drop this in time for the Canadian edition), we wanted to give our own thanks to some of the things that made 2024 worth the ‘survive to ’25’ slogan that echoed through many facets of production.
1. Our Users!
Without users, an app is just an idea. Without Scriptation users, our app is just a joke. The #ScriptationNation not only keeps us in business, but keeps us in a healthy supply of feedback and innovative directions from all corners of production– actors, producers, writers, script supervisors, ADs, UPMs, sound, stunts and more. Basically, if you’re on a crew list? You can benefit from Scriptation.
Not to speak out of school, but someone in the know has told us there’s some VERY exciting things coming to Scriptation in the future– some of which have been on users’ wish lists for as long as we’ve been in your Apps folder.
The symbiotic relationship helps us bring you better, less-buggy versions of Scriptation with every release. We even debuted Scriptation on Canny, allowing users who we don’t run into at a trade show or happy hour to tell us what they’d love to see in future releases: and we’re listening. Stop by and sign in to up-vote some of the amazing ideas coming at you… from you.
2. The Help Desk
Need Scriptation assistance? There’s a desk for that.
The Help Desk is your one stop shop (with many, many, many aisles...) for all things tip, hack, and instruction manual. You can literally learn all there is to know about Scriptation; provided you have a few weeks to sift through the various articles, video tutorials, and photo guides. Learn how the app can help you improve as a writer, an actor, and a producer (among others) within the tabs of these tomes.
Make sure to bookmark the “Tips & Tricks“ section for all the latest how-tos for the whats-its.
3. Scriptation 5.0 introduces REHEARSE
With Scriptation Rehearse, our app went from a great place to read and annotate scripts to one of the best places for actors to Read, Rehearse, and Record them. The introduction of more actor-friendly features like customizable voices for your read through (with accents!) to getting to assign which elements of the script are read aloud (see ya later, over-flowery stage direction) help Version 5.0 do for cast what 1.0 did for crew.
If you haven’t taken a tour yet, do yourself a favor and feast your eyes on all the fabulous features.
The next audition you Record could be your big break!
4. Scriptation Social Media Channels
There’s never been more places shouting, “Follow us on (insert social media venue you’ve never heard of)!” than today, which is why Scriptation is taking strides to make sure our social output stands on its own. You can laugh with us over production memes on Instagram, learn from our webinars on Youtube, or have a fun mix of both on TikTok… and if you’re not following the Scriptation TikTok, are you really even a member of #ScriptationNation?
While you can like, follow, and/or subscribe to Scriptation on nearly any social media outlet for content both educational and entertaining, the best feature is getting to interact with fellow users. You can chat about what you’re working on, how you use the app, and — potentially — what you can collaborate on in the future.
5. Our Collaborators
Speaking of collaborators, did you know Scriptation has partnered with Cinaspe? Line Producers, ADs, and UPMs sure did, as Scriptation’s Tagging feature + Cinaspe’s breakdown software = a match made in Hollywood Heaven (also, other centers of production).
Get a full breakdown of how to blend these two production apps with this user guide.
We also continue to partner with Pete Chatmon on his excellent podcast “Let’s Shoot With Pete Chatmon“, where the vet of shows ranging from High Potential to black-ish takes you inside the world of directing TV, with informative insight into what it takes to start — and maintain — a career behind the monitors of video village.
We’re still “Screaming Into the Hollywood Abyss“, because after the last few months, who isn’t?
6. Showcase Writers!
The Scriptation Showcase script competition saw some of our best entrees to date, with innovative, creative takes from writers on subjects new and old. Rouge by Victoria Lu won our Best Teleplay contest for 2024, while our Feature & Shorts writers are in the process of final judging.
Unlike some other script contests, where writers see their entries thrown in a warehouse right out of Raiders of the Lost Arc, our Top 25 in each category get their scripts placed right in the Scriptation app, where it’s shared with heads of studios, presidents of pods, and creatives behind such hits as Stranger Things, Hacks, and The Morning Show.
Look for some exciting new prizes and entry details for the next installment, coming soon!
