As a company founded on our commitment to sustainability and innovation, we’ve often wondered how we could best measure the environmental impact of going paperless on set. Obviously, there’s less waste because there are fewer printed scripts, but how does this all truly stack up by the numbers?

While we don’t have access to individual user data in Scriptation, we do have overall metrics and we’ve been able to calculate our collective environmental impact from the last year. Between March 1, 2023 and February 28, 2024, Scriptation users have saved over 4,633,950 sheets of paper which is equivalent to saving over 416,000 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. That’s like removing 37.6 gas cars from the road! Great work team!

So, how did we get these numbers that you’re seeing on your report?

In our 4.4.1 update on July 20, 2023, we started logging some usage data onto your individual device. Think of it like a little ticker within Scriptation that anonymously tallies how much paper you are saving.

It’s important to note: this information is only stored locally (on your unique device) and cannot be accessed by anyone but you (not even by us here at Scriptation!). TL;DR, only your iPad knows how many trees you’ve saved.

To calculate your impact, Scriptation started tallying:

• The amount of time spent with Scriptation open as your active app. (This does not include time spent with Scriptation in the “background” on iPad or iPhone, but will include all time Scriptation is open on Mac.)
• The number of transfers that you’ve completed.
• The number of pages in each unique document imported into Scriptation or downloaded from a cloud provider.
• The number of layer exports and shares completed. (We didn’t use this data this year for these reports, but maybe it’ll make it next year!)

And again, because this data is not attached to anything identifiable, if you use Scriptation across multiple devices, you will only be seeing the numbers relevant to your time in the app on that specific device. To calculate your overall impact, you’ll have to do a little math and add up the numbers across each of your devices.

With this data, Scriptation utilizes the Environmental Paper Network‘s calculations to translate your time in Scriptation into sustainable savings.

To illustrate an example, a ream of paper is 500 pages and according to the Environmental Paper Network’s Paper Calculator, those 500 pages are equivalent to:

• 44.9 pounds of CO2
• 53.5 gallons of water
• 2.9 pounds of waste

We then used the following calculations per sheet of paper to estimate each type of impact:

• 1 sheet = .0898 lbs of CO2
• 1 sheet = .107 gals of water
• 1 sheet = .0058 lbs of waste

Then, we multiply your total number of pages opened in Scriptation by the numbers above to reach your environmental savings!

Please note, we could only test certain scenarios because of our limited access to real-world data, so if your numbers appear “off” – let us know! We’d love your feedback and are looking to improve these reports next year.
